The Best Way to Spend a Day on the Wellington Waterfront
If you’re sailing into Wellington Harbour you’ll grab a sneak peak of the joy that is Wellington Waterfront. If you’re visiting Wellington and have a day to spare, make it count by exploring this vibrant stretch of the city packed with activities, incredible views, and local flavours. Whether you’re looking to burn some energy or simply soak in the harbour vibes, this easy going itinerary will leave you feeling like a local.
Start your adventure with a dose of local life. The Harbourside Markets, open every Sunday morning until 2pm, with stalls overflowing with fresh produce, artisan breads, local honey, and sizzling street food. Musicians add to the buzz, and the energy is infectious – you’ll want to linger here for a while.
Next stop, Ferg's Kayaks, a true Wellington institution nestled right on the waterfront. Known for its epic water activities, Ferg’s also offers indoor rock climbing and rollerblading – perfect for all weather. Lace up your blades and cruise the waterfront path, dodging seagulls and catching sea spray as you go. The rock wall is another must-do, with challenges for all levels and both bouldering and belaying climbing options available.
Frank Kitts Park is always a great spot to take a breather. Kids can enjoy the playground while you soak in harbour views from the grassy steps, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a few local legends sharing some tunes, or a seal or two lounging on the rocks.
Next stop: Crocodile bikes! If rollerblading isn't your style, hire one of these fun, multi-person bikes and cruise the waterfront as a group. It's a lighthearted way to take in the views, stay protected from the sun, and is guaranteed to have you all laughing as you pedal along the quay!
If the sun’s out, zoom around to Oriental Bay – Wellington’s golden inner-city beach. Take a dip, or just sit and enjoy the view across the water to the south coast hills.
All that adventuring deserves a sweet reward, so after returning your bikes, indulge in Crocshake’s loaded legendary milkshakes. Topped with everything from waffle cones to whipped cream and crushed Oreos, these shakes are pure indulgence – worth every sip.
The Wellington Waterfront is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of place. Whether you’re seeking thrill, chill, or a little of both – this is your front-row seat to everything we love about the capital.
